This is a searchable FileMaker Pro database of the specimens in the Bivalve Collection at the OSU Museum of Biological Diversity, one of the largest collections of freshwater bivalves in the world. The database accesses 70,000 lots comprising nearly half a million specimens.

"The Division of Molluscs is divided into two major collections, housed in separate ranges. The bivalve collection consists of 80,000 catalogued lots, mainly composed of North American freshwater mussels. The gastropod collection (and a small amount of material of other molluscan orders) consists of 63,000 catalogued lots, primarily North American freshwater snails. Mussel/Host Database - OSU
Freshwater mussels are parasitic in their larval form. During this stage of development the larvae, called glochidia, attach themselves to a host (usually a fish). They remain attached for the duration of this life-cycle stage. MusselHost relationships are species specific a given species of mussel can only reside on specific host species. Much research has gone into determining the suitable hosts for each species of mussel.
